Tree Information x

Identifier: WTR/1986
Tree Type: Single
Registered By: Lloyd, M.
Registration Category: Historic tree – National interest
General Notes:
Over the period that New Zealand’s Parliament has been in Wellington – 1865 to the present – there have been many changes to both the buildings and grounds [1]. This Norfolk Island Pine has survived these changes, still presenting a noticeable sight in the Parliament skyline even though other trees have grown up around it (see the photos). It was planted on April 15, 1869, by Queen Victoria’s second son, Prince Alfred, the Duke of Edinburgh [2], who planted many other trees throughout the country during his royal visit. Close by is a second Norfolk Island Pine, but its planting date is not recorded (it was not part of the Duke’s official planting activity and looks to have been planted 30 or so years later). Given its age the older Araucaria appears relatively short, not looking as tall as others in Wellington of a similar age [3]. There are many historic photos available showing the Norfolk Island Pine across its lifespan [4].
