General Notes: |
Purau Station Homestead was first settled in 1843 by the Greenwood brothers, the first European settlers in Lyttelton Harbour. They built a large timber house at this location. Subsequent owners the Rhodes brothers built the fine old locally quarried sandstone homestead and later the Luttrell brothers made further improvements. The Gardiner family have owned the property since 1874[1]. The 2011 Christchurch earthquake severely damage the Heritage New Zealand Category 1 homestead.
The grounds contain many old heritage trees reported to have been planted in 1870. This magnificent bunya pine is the largest southern growing specimen known in New Zealand and appears of similar vintage to the T.H. Potts tree at Governors Bay[2](Cadwallader B., Hammer, R., & Smith, J. 2015). References 1) Heritage New Zealand. Heritage listing 280 Purau Station Homestead.
