Westoe was originally built for Sir William Fox (1812 -1893). Fox, and his wife Sarah who arrived to settle in New Zealand in 1842. Westoe was named after the village in north east England where Fox was born.
The four hectare garden was started by Fox at the time the homestead was built in 1874. Some of the original plantings - an Atlantic cedar MWR/1041, stone pine MWR/1042 and Norfolk Island pine MWR/1043 are magnificent specimen trees today. Since 1885 three generations of the Howard family, each with a special interest in unusual plants, have developed the garden.
