General Notes: |
This tree, located in the small West Coast town of Ahaura, rose to prominence in 1984 when it was published in the book 'Great Trees of New Zealand' by S. W. Burstall as the 'largest and the best common lime by far in New Zealand'.
At the time Burstall made his determinations of national champions he did not differentiate between single and multiple stemmed trees, such is the convention today. The tree, however, still makes a significant statement on the outskirts of Ahaura and whilst it is no longer considered the New Zealand champion it will continue to remain part of the story of our early tree heritage (Cadwallader 2012).
