'The only pendulous form of Sophora japonica (now renamed Styphnolobium) known in New Zealand. A Sophora japonica was recorded in 1896, but no mention was made of the species 'pendula'. Burstall 1974. 'It was planted by Thomas Mason, an early settler and horticulturist, in his garden called "The Gums". This garden included many other trees imported from around the world. The garden was established when Pito-one (Petone) was the major British settlement in the early days of the region. The Mason estate was subdivided but many trees still remain as evidence of the garden'. Mole 1979. Reference. Burstall SW. FM. Report no. 20. 1974; p.41. Burstall SW. & Sale EV.
