This tree is thought to have been planted by local pioneer farmer Barton in 1860's. The tree originally came into NZ as part of a consignment of plant material brought into NZ by a pioneer farmer Ludlam (Lower Hutt) for his property which later became the Belle Vue Gardens Lower Hutt.
A large tree for this area, very good mature example of species, rounded spreading canopy, some wind-shaping by prevailing nor westerly wind, tree is growing on the old Hutt River terrace with many surface roots into a seasonal creek (King, J.M. 2010). |
