Identifier: HBR/0603
Historical Reg No: 356
Tree Type: Single
Registered By: Looij, T.J.
Registration Category: Historic tree – National interest
General Notes:

 x
The tree has a very grand stature. Beautiful shape and good crown form. The tree is known as the 'Coronation Oak'. It is in the grounds of Duart House which is Hastings District Council property. It was an old homestead and is now preserved under the Historic Places Trust and used as a venue for clubs, weddings etc. The tree was planted in approximately 1902 to mark the ascension to the throne of Edward VII (Looij, T.J. 1999).

The house was completed in 1882 and the oak was planted in 1902 to commemorate the coronation of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. As can be seen from the 1958 aerial it has been a massive presence in the Duart House gardens for many years. The recent Cyclone Gabrielle of February 2023 broke some limbs, however, the tree survived and as the photos show it has burst into leaf in the spring of 2023 and now looks very healthy despite a few pruned limbs (Mike Lloyd, 2023).
