General Notes:
|
This impressive four-stemmed Northern Rata is a striking and mature specimen, deeply rooted in the history of Le Bons Bay. According to local Garry Brittenden, the tree was brought to the area by William Symes, who arrived in New Zealand at age 21 in 1874. After settling in Le Bons Bay in the late 1870s and purchasing the beach property, Symes is said to have transported the young seedling in a matchbox—an act of foresight and care. Now approximately 150 years old, the tree stands as a living legacy of early settler history and botanical determination (Evans, B., 2025).
