General Notes:
|
Three macrocarpas on this site are registered in the Lower Hutt Notable Tree Register, and about six other macrocarpa trees of similar age grow in the same site. This entry is for the largest of the three registered trees, which stands out for the robustness of its trunk and the way this is retained into the evenly spread canopy. It is in a more sheltered area which may explain why none of its large branches have broken off in the strong Wellington winds (other trees on the same site have been battered). It is situated on the ‘Old Coach Road’ which is the name European settlers gave to the established route Maori took from Porirua Harbour to Hutt Harbour. The owner of the farm within which the trees grow has researched the history of the site and believes the trees originally functioned as shelter in a horse-watering spot, possibly being planted circa 1870. The size of the tree, especially the circumference of the bole, suggests this is likely to be an accurate planting date. It is an impressive sight (Lloyd, M., 2025).
