General Notes:
|
This ponderosa or western yellow pine is the tallest tree beside the Cheviot cricket ground area in the Cheviot Hills Reserve. It has typically sparse foliage, but it is a massive tree, taller than the tallest of the group of seven Sequoiadendron giganteum planted in the same area. Given its size it was probably planted during the time the Hon. William Robinson owned the Cheviot Hills Estate (see CR/G2018 for details) with circa 1875 looking to be a reasonable estimate of planting date. The solid single trunk has attractive patterning and a typical yellow colour. An impressive specimen very visible in the location (Lloyd, M., 2024).
