General Notes:
|
Although 200 metres separates the two parts of this group of Phoenix palms, since both are notable St Heliers Bay landmarks they are best treated as one group. Six flank the St Heliers Beach Bathing Sheds, a heritage protected building, in the middle of the Bay. The other three are in a triangular road reserve on Long Drive, just above the western end of the beach. The trio afford a great sight with Rangitoto Island in the background (see photo). The 1959 historic photo [1] shows the view from the Bathing Sheds across to the trio at Long Drive, clearly suggesting a planting date of circa 1935 is reasonable. This is consistent with other plantings of Phoenix palms along Tamaki Drive in Kohimarama and Mission Bay (Lloyd, M., 2024).
