This London plane is dedicated to Private, William S. Bovey, who was killed in action at Ypres in the Battle of Passchendaele on 12 October 1917. There is a memorial to the 42 year old Cresswell at Tyne Cot Memorial, Tyne Cot Cemetery, Zonnebeke, Belgium.
The tree was planted along with others in conjunction with the unveiling of the Stoke First World War Memorial Gates in 1924 commemorating the lives of 7 Stoke men "who made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War".
