This London plane is dedicated to Private, Albert E. Cresswell, who was killed in action in the 3rd battle of the Somme at Flers on 17 September 1916. There is a memorial to the 32 year old Cresswell at Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval,Somme, France.
The tree was planted along with others in conjunction with the unveiling of the Stoke First World War Memorial Gates in 1924 commemorating the lives of 7 Stoke men "who made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War".
