This giant sequoia is dedicated to Sapper, Earnest G. Giblin, who was wounded at the Somme in Belgium 10 September, 1916 . He was transferred to Brockenhurst hospital in the UK but never recovered from his injuries. He died 3 October 1916 at the age of 24 and is buried at Brockenhurst (St Nicholas) Churchyard, Hampshire, England.
The tree was planted along with others in conjunction with the unveiling of the Stoke First World War Memorial Gates in 1924 commemorating the lives of 7 Stoke men "who made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War".
