General Notes:
|
Group of 7 very old majestic oak trees apparently at the birthplace in Weatherstones of famous local folk hero William O'Leary also known as Arawata Bill in 1865. Denis Glover (1912-1980) wrote a well-known poem about Arawhata Bill. Also there is much biographical information available about him.
The trees are showing many signs of stress with rotting and broken branches. They are hemmed in a few metres on each side by commercial forestry on the edge of Phoenix Dam. Apparently there was a former homestead at this location. The tree could be at very high risk if adjacent forestry is logged or cleared. The forestry site area is accessed by locals for recreation (Smith, S., 2023). References 1] William O'Leary Dictionary of New Zealand Biography, first published in 1996.
