Tree Information x

Identifier: WGR/G1918
Tree Type: Group
Registered By: Lloyd, M.
Registration Category: Notable tree/s – Local interest
General Notes:
Pukenamu Queen’s Park is a reserve covering 7.2 hectares in the town centre of Whanganui [1]. It houses a War Memorial Centre, several other specific war memorials, and the Sarjeant Gallery, the entrance road to which is lined by this group of Phoenix palms. Overall the park contains 35 Phoenix palms, but this group is the largest and oldest, having been planted in 1938 [2]. This group now has protected status within the park [1]. Originally there were 17 palms lining Campbell St, now renamed Pukenamu Drive, but with the expansion of the Sarjeant Gallery, due to be finished in 2024, 4 palms had to be removed (see the aerial photo [3] showing the full group of the palms in 1958). However, in recognition of the ‘Phoenix Palm trees [being] a distinctive feature of the Reserve’ [1], 2 replacement palms are due to be planted in the western section of the group where only 2 currently stand [1]. Their appreciated status within the park further adds to the significant overall presence of palms in Whanganui [see 4, 5].
