This tree at Hawera Intermediate School was planted in 1915 by Mr Conrad A Strack and his daughter Uriti May Strack. The tree was purchased at the winter show and planted beside the path that led from the headmaster's house into the school grounds. Conrad Strack was the headmaster of the then Hawera Main School from 1896-1924. Sadly he died only one year after retirement.
Conrad lost a son Karl Justus Strack at Passchendale in 1917. The plaque was later organised by Conrad's daughter Uriti May Torrie (nee Strack) who was a teacher from 1912-1916 at the School. Uriti Torrie lived to 96 years of age and died in 1987 in England. She lost her fiancee Herbert Hogden in France also in 1917. Herbert left a legacy to Uriti which enabled her to study medicine at Otago University. Uriti (Riti) worked as a Doctor until she was 75 years old (Barker, K.P., 2023).
