In July 1921 a public meeting was held where it was decided to erect a cenotaph in the town, as a memorial to the local soldiers killed in the war [1]. Further meetings were held to raise funds [2] for the project which resulted in £1100 being raised [3].
The cenotaph was unveiled on ANZAC Day 1924, in the presence of a large gathering, by Brigadier-General Meldrum, C.M.G., D.S.O [4]. It is unclear if the date palm was planted at the same time but it appears to be of the same vintage. Canary Island date palms are often seen to be associated with war memorials around the country (Cadwallader, B.G., 2020) [1] Untitled, Otago Witness, Issue 3515, 26 July 1921, Page 18 [2] WAR MEMORIAL.
