General Notes:

One of the many large pūriri in the grounds of Brooklands Park (indeed, likely the largest of 'normal' form), this tree became locally famous as a result of the nearby Bowl of Brooklands venue: To support large performing acts, the access road to the stage needed to be widened. The tree, growing right on the roadside, would have been affected by the ground works, risking its health.
As a result, the former curator of Pukekura Park, the late George Fuller, at the age of 80, staged a vigil under the tree, explaining to those interested in the value of the tree, the surrounding bush and the risks of development. The plans to widen the road changed, and Fuller was recognised as the Taranaki Daily News Person of the Year in 2009. References: Taranaki Daily News, August 9, 2009, accessed 2023 |
