|
The tree has changed little over the years but as reported in Photo News in 1962 it came close to being removed at one time. The image published at the time came with the following caption:
Battle of Blue Gum Ends ‘The Nelson Hospital Board and city council agreed to lay down arms after several months of battling over this blue-gum at the corner of Kawai and Franklyn Street, Council considered it a menace to traffic, wires etc. and wanted it cut down, but the hospital board opposed it. A compromise was reached, "Give Way" signs being erected on Kawai Street.' The tree was associated with the first dedicated Nurses' Home at Nelson Hospital, later known as Dalton House. It was opened on 5 April 1916 and remained there until it was demolished in 2013 (Cadwallader, B.G., 2023). References [1] Photo News, Number 17, 31 March, 1962 [2] The Prow, www.theprow.org.nz.
