MDC protected tree number 189 is the last of three large gums present in the Rema Reserve when it was formed after subdivision of the area. They were the remnants of a line of trees that extended from Wither Road to near the southern end of the reserve on land that was formerly part of the 'Leafmare' Orchard Estate. The trees were planted by Herbert (Bert) John Souter Mitchell, later a Mayor of Blenheim ( 1950-1953). The two other trees were removed in 2014 leaving this solitary specimen (Ballinger, H.M., 2022).
