|
The Cornwall Park olive grove once included 5000 olive trees sourced from the South Australian fruit industry in the 1860's. Sir John Logan Campbell planted the trees to establish a fruit industry in New Zealand following a visit to Italy.
Today approximately 200 trees remain. The fruit from the trees have been used to extract olive oil and for pickling olives at times. These gnarly old trees range up to 15 metres in height but typically 8-10 metres. They are some of the oldest trees in the park (Barker, K. P., 2021).
