Tree Information x

Identifier: WKR/1330
Tree Type: Single
Registered By: Smillie, M.J.
Registration Category: Notable tree – National interest
General Notes:
Hakarimata Scenic Reserve, covering the Hakarimata Range extends past the western banks of the Waikato and Waipa Rivers, across from Taupiri and down past Ngaruawahia.

The Hakarimata name commemorates a great 17th century feast between Ngati Maniapoto and the Waikato people, being a contraction of "Haakari-kai-mata", or "mountain of uncooked food"[1].

The scenic reserve contains a number of walking tracks, including, at the northern end of the reserve, a short loop track to a large kauri tree, close to the southern limit of the species. Originally one of two large trees in the reserve, it survives its former companion tree (approximately 170 cm dbh and 36 m tall) which fell in 2009[2].
