Opepe Bush Scenic and Historic Reserve is bisected by SH5 between Naiper and Taupo. Known for an attack by Te Kooti's forces in 1869 on a Bay of Plenty Volunteer Cavalry encampment, and subsequent building of a Armed Constabulary stockade, a remnant of the surrounding forest remains on the northern side of the reserve. With many large rimu, matai and a handful of totara, a large rimu is a highlight of the northern bush loop walk (Smillie 2015).
