General Notes: |
Located at the rear of the former Hamilton Hotel site. The hotel was built in 1865 and taken over in 1874 by Richard Gwynne and his wife Sarah. As well as being a hotel owner and one of Hamilton Borough’s first councillors, Richard Gwynne was an enthusiastic gardener who is credited with planting the first trees, laying out and keeping the grounds in admirable style until his premature death in 1883.
The original hotel burned down in 1898 with the second hotel suffering the same fate in 1922. This tree and several others are all that remain of the original hotel grounds. Ref: History of the Hamilton Hotel 1865-1985, www.hamiltonlibraries.co.nz. |
