Registered By: Cadwallader, B.G.
Registration Category: Notable tree – National interest
General Notes:

This tree (one of two at the site) is the largest cork oak in the region. Labeled as being planted c1857 but no sign can be seen of the tree in early photos of the former Nelson Provincial Government Buildings that were constructed on the site in 1861.

Research has found a reference to the gifting of cork oaks and the intention to plant trees at the site in 1866. In News of The Month - Nelson & New Zealand Chronicle, Vol. XXV, issue 44, 10 April 1866, page 6 the following is reported in the 31st March Acclimatization Society Report. 'Dr. Muller of the Botanical Gardens of Melbourne, kindly forwarded to us twenty-four specimens of the cork oak, some of which have been distributed to members of the society, the remainder are thriving, and will, a the proper season, be disposed of to the Provincial Government, to be planted in the public grounds in which the Government Buildings stand'.
