General Notes: |
This reserve, originally known as 'Milton's Acre', was renamed Anzac Park by the City Council in December 1915 (Colonist, 1915). Phoenix palms were known to exist in Nelson around 1903 and were locally referred to as 'Monte Carlo palms' as this is where the original seed stock is reported to have come from (Nelson Evening Mail, 1903). The 20 older specimens in the park were planted in 1914 and were gifted by Melrose House owner, Percy Adams (Colonist, 1914). Whilst not strictly a commemorative planting, the established palms now form an appropriate honour guard for those represented on the cenotaph in the centre of the park (Cadwallader, 2013).
